Living with #COVID19 (Part One)

Picture
Picture
I usually don’t post about myself but I thought it would be important to share what “Living With COVID-19” from my perspective is. You see, I was so excited when travel started commencing again. I got a new client in CA and I could visit with family at the same time, win win or so I thought.

I arrived June 24th, uneventful. Met with client, caught up with family, kids, grandkids and several friends, mind you, wearing a mask as a precaution. 4th of July was great, grandkids and siblings enjoyed the fireworks that we could see from surrounding neighborhoods. Looked like the whole sky lit up at different times, a great light show (and did I mention FREE?)!!

Life was good and then everything stopped abruptly when my sister called to tell us she tested positive for COVID-19 and that we would have to watch for symptoms. I have been staying with my brother and sister-in-law, so we all three tried to figure out how much contact we had with her and shrugged our shoulders and said to ourselves nothing to worry about, no symptoms here.

How wrong we were. A few days later my brother woke up with a migraine, no big deal right, that’s not COVID-19 right, he gets these regularly, WRONG!! The headache was first, then the chills and overall weakness. His wife took him to ER where they gave him a breathing treatment, required COVID-19 test, prescription for antibiotics and sent him home to recover. Apparently, if you can recover at home, it is the best for you, the hospitals are understaffed (in the COVID-19 ward, it’s two nurses per patient) and not enough beds. The next morning, I see my brother in the kitchen and he tells me he can’t breathe, and my sister-in-law was coughing all night, so we rush to the hospital. They admit him for severe pneumonia and administer COVID-19 test, chest x-rays, blood work for my sister-in-law and send her home to recover.

Oh my symptoms, I had a mega migraine for a about a week while all this was going on. I kept telling myself, I don’t have “IT” because I get migraines all the time. Well on the 5th day of migraines, my chest started to hurt, I coughed when I breathed in and had a fever. Off to the ER, where I was diagnosed with severe dehydration, Pneumonia and COVID-19. How did they know so fast before the actual test came back? Well, they take blood work and I had the COVID-19 markers and close family members who tested positive already. So, two IVs, and antibiotics and about 7 hours later I got to go home to recover.

I have to tell you this was the worst pain I have felt in a long time. The antibiotics I had to take made everything smell and taste the same. But, I have the best care at home, my sister-in-law is a Home Health Nurse, and even though she was struggling with symptoms of her own, she monitored my vitals, brought me food and medicine.

My brother is still in the hospital at the writing of this post. The doctors put him on a ventilator and an induced coma for better treatment of his lungs. It has been a daily vigil from home because they allow NO Visitors. We were calling the nurses for his status regularly. It has always been news of improvement. They even gave him Convalescent Plasma of recent recovered COVID-19 patients and he showed improvement.

I will post again with a follow up soon, I have been told it’s a long recovery for those of us whose lungs were affected with the Coronavirus. Thank you to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Apple Valley, CA for all their efforts in taking care of COVID-19 patients especially our family.

Tap into Employer Benefit Resources in Times of Uncertainty

(Family Features) For many American workers, how they do their jobs dramatically changed with the spread of #COVID19. Some have shifted to working from home while others moved to part-time or reduced hours.

With uncertainty abound, now's a good time to take stock of your physical and mental health and familiarize yourself with the resources available from your employer.

As part of a report on mental health, employee benefits company Unum found nearly three-quarters (74%) of working adults feel big life events can have a major impact on their mental health. Some top mental health triggers include a person's health (69%), finances (67%), relationships (59%) and job satisfaction (52%).

"With so many people experiencing major shifts in not only their work lives, but also potentially their health, finances and personal lives, now is a good time to know what resources are available," said Laurie Mitchell, assistant vice president of global wellbeing and health at Unum.

Often linked with a health care or disability plan's coverage, employee assistance programs, telemedicine or tele-behavioral health and app-based programs are low-cost solutions that allow people to connect with a professional on their own time when they're experiencing a problem.

What resources are available during #COVI9? Here are a few resource options:

Employee Assistance Programs
An employee assistance program (EAP) often offers free and confidential assessments, short-term counseling, referrals and follow-up services to people who have personal or work-related concerns. EAPs address a wide range of issues affecting mental and emotional wellbeing, such as alcohol and other substance abuse, stress, grief, family problems and psychological disorders. Many EAPs also provide services to help caregivers, assist with financial planning or offer child care resources.

Telemedicine and App-Based Mental Health Solutions
Telemedicine services can make accessing medical and mental health resources easier. There are even apps that can target specific mental health needs, and people can access them on their own time when they need the services. These types of tools can be effective complements to traditional care and help with everything from increasing positivity and efficiency to reducing stress and anxiety.

"Employees should ask their human resources department what resources are available and be supportive of colleagues who may be struggling as well," Mitchell said. "Especially during this time of uncertainty, offering support to others and knowing where to direct them can improve lives and help create a more inclusive work environment."

In addition, the report found 93% of human resources professionals say their companies offer an EAP, yet only 38% of employees said they're aware of the resource. More than half of human resources professionals also said they offer financial counseling, legal services and telemedicine services, but only a fraction of employees reported being aware these services exist.

As businesses chart new ways of working, these types of tools can help employees establish new ways of interacting with support services when in-person options may not be available. Even if you're not struggling now, as you navigate this uncertain time, consider asking your employer what resources you have access to that can help support your physical and mental wellbeing.

#DistanceLearning

Picture
Picture
Some of us are in week three of this #DistanceLearning some longer. I remember when I #homeschooled my girls, it was a choice we made.  And it was a hybrid program, I picked up packets from the school, then I facilitated the curriculum. To which we were able to add additional classes like dance, music and even swimming in our backyard for P.E.  We lived in California at the time, so the girls really liked P.E. class. I know most of the parents out there may be experiencing some challenges with the new norm.  So, I checked in with a close friend who is a teacher and who also lives in China and here are her #DistanceLearningTips:

If you are trying to homeschool your children, there are many ways to do this if you have access to the internet. I even heard if you check wifi companies are giving free access to wifi, and they will go to your house to install the program for you. I do not have access to those companies, but you could call to find out. As far as online programs, there are many programs who are giving free access to their pages, so here are quite a few you can review: Go Noodle (indoor exercise...tons of songs, dances, educational songs, etc.), Kahoot (challenge quizzes), Khan Academy (math and other skills), edhelper (worksheets), starfall (reading), mystery science, generation genius (10 day free trial). Also, there are so many things on Youtube, GodTube, Teachertube...just to name a few. I hope this helps you get started with whatever you need to do to provide for your children.

I hope these tips help.  Check back for more #PhysicalDistancingTips.  Let's stay #StaySocialVirtually.

#SelfCareSunday

Picture
I have been thinking of staying positive in this trying time for us all.  I heard said this week, we should not call it #SocialDistancing because we are humans in need of social interaction.  We should, therefore, call it #PhysicalDistancing and #staysocialvirtually.  So will you join me in starting your week with a little #selfcare.  It may sound silly but I have been wanting to try out a couple of hairstyles, like all those awesome braided hair styles.  Well, I got time! YouTube is great for tutorials.  I have been wanting to take “just one day” where I can put some different outfits together, “I got time”!

What have you had on your “To Do List”? I will be creating a Facebook Page Group for all those who wish to share their list and their accomplishments. Let's encourage each other, be there for each other and we will come through this a better version of ourselves.

Take Sundays to get ready for the week, you owe it to yourself to keep a schedule.  Maybe take the opportunity to use those bath bombs or essential oils you have been meaning to try. Remember, there is no rush, so you can take the extra #MeTime. If you don’t have any, no worries, check out a few of my friends who will gladly ship some to your door. And while you’re at it check out www.yourdayent.com to stream some music.

1. Bath Products: Check out www.cokosscrubs.com they have handcrafted skin care, body care, hair care and bath products.  And right now they are offering FREE Shipping on orders of over $50.
2. Essential Oils: Check out Jennifer’s site www.eowire.lifestepseo.com or you can call/text her directly for help navigating what oils are best for you.

Don’t forget to check out our blog next week for more tips on this new norm of #shelterinplace. You can also read our latest issue of RENEW Magazine.
